Venice has been a source of inspiration for generations of travelers, painters, architects, and poets. This northeastern Italian city was built on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and connected by bridges. Luigi Barzini described it in his New York Times article as “undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man.”
Venice is an amazing destination to visit year round, but during the New Year the festivities really get going. La Festa di San Silvestro (the New Year celebration) begins with concerts and parties on New Year’s Eve. Visit La Fenice Theater or wander into St. Mark’s Square for a toast and a communal kiss at midnight.
Fireworks streak across the night sky to ring in the New Year, but the celebration doesn’t end there. The revelry lasts until dawn, when locals watch the sunrise and take a dip in beautiful Lido Beach. The music plays on as concerts continue through New Year’s Day. Traditional New Year foods include a lentil dish that is meant to symbolize good fortune. A less popular tradition: residents throwing old things out their apartment windows.
Ring in the New Year the right way: with friends, family, and fun. If you’re planning to travel to Venice, Italy, start your journey with the right map.
