Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. Most of its land area is protected within the boundaries of Rapa Nui National Park. Famous for its monumental statues (called moai) as well as the mysteries surrounding its original inhabitants, Easter Island is a must-see location.
Easter Island is most famous for its giant moai statues. Constructed between 1100 and 1680, there are a total of 887 statues, which most refer to as the “Easter Island Heads.” The moai are mostly made from a distinctive volcanic ash found in the island’s now extinct volcano. The natives wet the ash-stones periodically as they chiseled away at the statues in teams. It took a total of 6 men 1 year to complete one statue. Each statue represents the deceased head of a family’s lineage.
Unfortunately, Rapa Nui is also famous among the science community as an example of what overexploitation of resources can do to a region. When the first Polynesians settled the island there were abundant species of trees, including some palm trees over 50 feet tall. But when European visitors came to the island in the 1700’s, Rapa Nui’s tree and bird species were all but extinct. With no large trees, the people could no longer build sailing vessels and had to rely on subsistence farming. By the 1800’s, the Rapa Nui people had experienced a precipitous decline in population.
Today, the native Rapa Nui population is growing and is attempting to increase civil rights on the island, which is mostly populated by Chileans and Europeans.
