Best Places to Live in the US

Posted on September 7, 2012

Big cities may no longer be the best places to work or raise your family.  Some of the smaller, lesser known cities in the US have been voted the ‘best places to live’ by CNN Money Magazine.  MarketMAPS takes a look at some of the best cities to call home.  We’ll also show you just what makes these cities so special.

 Carmel, Indiana

With a population of just about 80,000, Carmel was voted the #1 best place to live in America.  About 20 minutes away from downtown Indianapolis, Carmel is a great place to work and play.  It has the second-highest concentration of office workers in Indiana, and has an unemployment rate that is half the national average.  The city is a great draw for families and offers a variety of housing options—from older homes to newer subdivisions.

Eden Prairie, Minnesota

Only 61,000 people live in this community.  Eden Prairie boasts terrific employment prospects, natural beauty, and a well-educated workforce.  While the rest of the nation is dealing with deficits, Eden Prairie has had a 2% budget surplus for the past 2 years.  The city continues ongoing expansion, which includes a commuter rail project that is in the works for 2018.  Families come for the jobs and stay for the lifestyle.

Irvine, California

Irvine seems to have it all: minutes from some of Southern California’s best beaches, half an hour from Los Angeles, and an hour from snowy mountains.  The 40-year old community has a population of about 213,000 people and contains about 20,000 acres of parks, and 44 miles of bike trails.  Although the home prices are high, new developments are creating more affordable options.

Overland Park, Kansas

In Overland Park, independent shops line downtown streets and residents rave about their friendly neighbors.  There is no lack of community spirit in this city.  With just over 175,000 residents, activities range from visiting the popular bi-weekly farmers market, to experiencing the 300-acre arboretum.  While the night-life may be a bit skimpy, Kansas City is nearby for a late night escape.
