Our planet is filled with natural splendor and man-made marvels.  As the leading publisher of maps of every area in the US and worldwide, we at MarketMAPS want to celebrate our world.  We continue our series of the 100 places you need to visit with another US national park that is like no other in the world: Arches National Park.

ArchesNational Park is located in eastern Utah and is home to approximately 2000 natural sandstone arches.  The park is nearly 76,679 acres in area and sits right outside the city of Moab.  The area was designated a National Park in 1971 and attracts numerous visitors each year who gaze at the many natural wonders the park has to offer.

The arches of ArchesNational Park were created by cycles of freezing and thawing rain and snow that continually dissolved the “glue” that held together the sand grains of the stone.  The variety of arches ranges from the Balanced Rock, which looks like it could tumble over at any minute, to the Landscape Arch, a thin arch bridge that spans over 290 feet.

The Mormon Elk Mountain Mission was among the first to attempt settlement of the area, but they decided the desert landscape could not support them.  However, Ute and Paiute tribes had inhabited the area since at least the 1700’s.  When the city of Moab developed, word spread of Arches natural beauty and many thought the area could become a tourist attraction.  In late 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a proclamation which enlarged Arches to protect additional scenic features and permit development of facilities to promote tourism.

Although rock climbing on the arches has long been prohibited, climbing in other areas of the park is a popular activity.  As is hiking, biking, camping, and backpacking.  Because of the dark skies over the park, Arches has become a popular destination for casual stargazers and professional astronomers.

With an abundance of desert landscape, wildlife, and breathtaking natural elegance, ArchesNational Park is a must-see stop on any Southwest road trip.  If you’re planning a trip to Arches, or want to decorate your home with a map of Utah, consult MarketMAPS.  We offer wall maps, map books, and digital maps of any area in the US and worldwide.
