Census Report Reveals Varying Degrees of US Internet Access

Posted on July 25, 2012

A recent report released by the US Census Bureau shows the varying degrees of internet access across the US.  Based on the 2010 Census, about 75% of homes in the US have internet access—although some states are well above (and below) that number.  MarketMAPS takes a look at the US’s internet access and how knowing these statistics can help businesses.

A recent Census report shows just how deeply internet access and computers have entered into American life.  The US average in 2010 was 75.9 percent of households having access to the internet.  Fifteen years ago, when the Census Bureau first collected data on households with internet access, only 18 percent of Americans lived in homes that could connect to the Web.  That number quickly grew.

By 2001, half of Americans had internet access at home, and that number climbed to two-thirds in 2009 and three-fourths in 2010.  Today, it would be hard to find an industry that hasn’t had to adapt to the rapid increase in internet use.  The Census Bureau said that the five states with the highest household access to the Internet in 2010 were New Hampshire, Utah, Washington, Massachusetts and Connecticut.  Some of the lowest were Alabama, Mississippi, and New Mexico

The Census report also revealed some interesting statistics.  Only 59.7 percent of people living in households with an income of less than $50,000 had internet access in 2010.  Among households with incomes between $50,000 and $99,999, 90.2 percent had internet access.  47.7 percent of Americans accessed the internet using home computers and cable; 9.1 percent used mobile.
